Every product is different. Our fees for simple devices can be as small as $X,000 and complex products can cost as much as $Y,000. Once you tell us about your project we can often give you a ball park figure. A more accurate figure will be provided once go through our rigorous process to identify requirements and understand the tasks required to design and develop a manufacturing package.
We are flexible in how we invoice our clients, depending on their needs. We can negotiate fixed-price or time and materials estimates, as well as spread the total project cost evenly or by milestone. Where there is uncertainty around the product definition or viability, we recommend micro stages to build confidence in the road map as we go. We typically bill monthly for work completed, normally with 14-day payment terms. Where we manufacture prototypes, we invoice on shipping of goods. We can provide time sheets of what we worked on in any given billing period.
Project duration depends on the complexity of the product and the goals. Simple projects for a proof of concept may take as little as a few months, while a full bespoke design and development project through to market ready production can be up to 12 months. After assessing your project we can provide a more accurate estimate.
IP in product development refers to more than just patentable innovations. IP may refer to copyrighted assets such as code, schematic designs, algorithms, procedures, visual designs and more. Any IP you bring to the design and development project remains with you and is protected by a mutual non-disclosure agreement. Any IP generated during the course of a project that was specifically developed for your unique use case is yours. However, note that most designs involve functions that are common to thousands of products around the world and are typically reused from product to product, and thus are not considered part of your product’s unique IP.
As a generalist consultant in product development, we will have worked on many projects in the past that are very similar to, but not identical to yours as of course your idea is hopefully unique! Similarities will include the range of technologies that underpin most internet connected devices and the regulatory requirements in Australia and globally. We typically start with a scoping meeting where you tell us what you have in mind and you get to know us better. Xentronics normally then develops a proposal for your consideration, setting out our time and cost estimates. The more detail you can give us the more accurate our proposal will be. Some clients like to invest in a Discovery Phase where we go deeper into requirements before developing the full project plan and proposal.
